Alicia was a lifelong resident of the Essex, Vermont area, and devoted her life to her beloved family and her first and second grade students. She was a beautiful, gracious, strong and loving person, who emanated humor and joy wherever she went. She made friends easily and opened her heart to her students, their families and almost everyone she had met.

Mary Alicia (Workman) Shanks, age 56, died tragically and far too young on August 24, 2006 in her Essex school classroom, as a result of a homicide. The shooter walked into Essex Elementary School and opened fire, killing Shanks.
