A Willingboro School District maintenance foreman was killed and five other district workers were injured on the afternoon of March 13, 1989 when the roof of the vacant school building they were demolishing collapsed on top of them, trapping them under the rubble, police and school district officials said. The former Alternative School building was located next to the Abraham Levitt school administration building on Salem Road in Willingboro. Six employees, who usually perform custodial duties in the district’s schools, were trapped inside the rubble for about 15 minutes before being freed by police, nearby residents and rescue workers. Killed was David A. Cartier, 46, of Edgewater Park, a foreman of the district’s maintenance department, a district employee since 1975 and a father of four.
